How to Be Saved

Do You Have Eternal Life?

"For what is your life?  It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away."  (James 4:14)

God's Word reveals that our lives are brief and could suddenly end at any time.

Some people live to see old age, yet many die while they are still young.  A brief visit to a cemetery confirms this.  None of us know when we will die; therefore we need to be ready anytime to stand before God.  The Bible warns, "And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27).

Are you ready to meet God?  If you died right now, where would you go?  Maybe you think you are going to have a long life, but Proverbs 27:1 says, "Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth."  The question we need to ask ourselves is:

How Can We Receive Eternal Life?

Many people think they will receive eternal life because they are religious, go to church, pray and do good deeds for others.  However, the Bible plainly reveals that we cannot receive eternal life through our own efforts.  "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast."  (Ephesians 2:8-9)

The Bible plainly states that all men are great sinners in the sight of God.  "As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one."  (Romans 3:10)  Again, the Word of God declares, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."  (Romans 3:23)  You might ask, "What is sin?"  The Bible declares sin as the transgression (breaking) of God's law (I John 3:4).

Have you ever lied or stolen?  Have you ever used God's name as a swear word?  Have you ever lusted after someone in your heart?  If you have, you have broken God's law and are a liar, thief, blasphemer and adulterer at heart, and you will be guilty before God on the judgment day.  Even the sin of lying is enough to condemn us before a Holy God.  Revelation 21:8 says, "...all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

All of our sins are like a great debt, too great for us to pay.  Jesus Christ our Saviour came to earth because he loved us.  He gave His life on the cross and shed His sinless blood to pay the debt of our sin.  Only His blood was sufficient to pay the awful price of sin.  "In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins."  (Colossians 1:14)

What Must I Do?

Jesus said there are two things you must do: "...repent ye, and believe the gospel." (Mark 1:15)

  1. Repent Turn from your sin and the path of destruction you are on.
  2. Believe the Gospel.  Christ died for your sins and was buried and rose again from the dead (I Corinthians 15).  Put your trust in Christ alone to save you.
All you need to do is ask Him to save you and He will give you eternal life as a free gift.  "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."  (Romans 6:23)  God has give us a wonderful promise that, "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."  (Romans 10:13)

Don't wait until tomorrow to make your decision because God tells us in His Word, "...behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." (2 Corinthians 6:2)
